次日早晨，天未亮的時候，耶穌起來，到曠野地方去，在那裏禱告。西門和同伴追了他去，遇見了就對他說：「眾人都找你。」耶穌對他們說：「我們可以往別處去，到鄰近的鄉村，我也好在那裏傳道，因為我是為這事出來的。」

那時，耶穌出去，上山禱告，整夜禱告神；

耶穌說：「我的食物就是遵行差我來者的旨意，做成他的工。

那人出去，倒說許多的話，把這件事傳揚開了，叫耶穌以後不得再明明地進城，只好在外邊曠野地方。人從各處都就了他來。

格拉森四圍的人，因為害怕得很，都求耶穌離開他們；耶穌就上船回去了。鬼所離開的那人懇求和耶穌同在；耶穌卻打發他回去，說：

於是撒馬利亞人來見耶穌，求他在他們那裏住下，他便在那裏住了兩天。

眾人見耶穌和門徒都不在那裏，就上了船，往迦百農去找耶穌。

耶穌聽見了，就上船從那裏獨自退到野地裏去。眾人聽見，就從各城裏步行跟隨他。耶穌出來，見有許多的人，就憐憫他們，治好了他們的病人。

他們卻強留他，說：「時候晚了，日頭已經平西了，請你同我們住下吧！」耶穌就進去，要同他們住下。

眾人看見他們去，有許多認識他們的，就從各城步行，一同跑到那裏，比他們先趕到了。耶穌出來，見有許多的人，就憐憫他們，因為他們如同羊沒有牧人一般，於是開口教訓他們許多道理。
