在那些日子，有一次耶穌出去到山上禱告，整夜禱告神。

耶穌說：“我的食物就是遵行差我來者的旨意，並且完成他的工作。

但那人出來，竟任意傳講，就把這事傳開了，以致耶穌不能再公開進城，只好留在外邊荒野的地方；然而還是有人從各處到他那裡去。

格拉森一帶的人，都要求耶穌離開他們，因為他們大大懼怕。他就上船回去了。鬼已經離開的那人求耶穌，要跟他在一起；但耶穌打發他回去，說：

於是他們來到耶穌那裡，求他和他們同住，耶穌就在那裡住了兩天。

群眾見耶穌和門徒都不在那裡，就上船往迦百農去找耶穌。

耶穌聽見了，就離開那裡，獨自坐船到曠野去。群眾聽見了，就從各城步行來跟隨他。耶穌上了岸，看見一大群人，就憐憫他們，醫好了他們的病人。

他們強留他說：“天晚了，太陽下山了，請與我們同住吧！”他就進去與他們同住。

群眾看見他們走了，有許多人認出了他們，就從各城出來，跑到那裡，比他們先趕到。耶穌一下船，看見一大群人，就憐憫他們，因為他們好像羊沒有牧人一樣，就開始教導他們許多事。
