在那些日子，有一次耶稣出去到山上祷告，整夜祷告神。

耶稣说：“我的食物就是遵行差我来者的旨意，并且完成他的工作。

但那人出来，竟任意传讲，就把这事传开了，以致耶稣不能再公开进城，只好留在外边荒野的地方；然而还是有人从各处到他那里去。

格拉森一带的人，都要求耶稣离开他们，因为他们大大惧怕。他就上船回去了。鬼已经离开的那人求耶稣，要跟他在一起；但耶稣打发他回去，说：

于是他们来到耶稣那里，求他和他们同住，耶稣就在那里住了两天。

群众见耶稣和门徒都不在那里，就上船往迦百农去找耶稣。

耶稣听见了，就离开那里，独自坐船到旷野去。群众听见了，就从各城步行来跟随他。耶稣上了岸，看见一大群人，就怜悯他们，医好了他们的病人。

他们强留他说：“天晚了，太阳下山了，请与我们同住吧！”他就进去与他们同住。

群众看见他们走了，有许多人认出了他们，就从各城出来，跑到那里，比他们先赶到。耶稣一下船，看见一大群人，就怜悯他们，因为他们好像羊没有牧人一样，就开始教导他们许多事。
