they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian towns of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside.There they continued preaching the gospel.

They went into Capernaum, and right away he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out,“ What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God!”Jesus rebuked him saying,“ Be silent, and come out of him!”And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.They were all amazed, and so they began to ask each other,“ What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”At once the news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.

But the Jews incited the prominent God-fearing women and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from their district.But Paul and Barnabas shook the dust off their feet against them and went to Iconium.And the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.In Iconium they entered the Jewish synagogue, as usual, and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.

While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply distressed when he saw that the city was full of idols.So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with those who worshiped God, as well as in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.

After they passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.As usual, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and rise from the dead:“ This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah.”
