如望對曰：『予即先知意灑雅所言：「野中呼者之聲、告眾修直主道」者是。』

予非基督、乃奉使為其前驅者耳。此乃予所夙言、爾曹當可為予作證。夫人娶婦而為新壻、新壻之友立而待之、聞其音則洋洋而喜。今者吾樂之沛然充溢、亦復如是。彼當日益、我宜日損。蓋臨自上者、居萬眾之上；本乎地者、不超乎地、而所言亦不出地上之事。惟降自天者、則超軼乎萬有之上。彼所證者、皆屬親見親聞、而眾獨不納其證。苟有納其證者、是即印證天主之真實無妄。天主所遣者、傳天主之訓、以天主賦以聖神、無有限量故、聖父篤愛聖子、已將一切授諸其手矣。信仰聖子者、獲永生；不順聖子者、無以望生、天主譴怒、恆臨其身。』

終我之身、聖德是務。兒乃先知、至尊遣汝；為主開道、預備厥路；導民於正、福音是布；蕩污滌穢、宿罪攸除。憑主慈腸、東方已曙；

如望之來。惟以證光。俾我元元。藉以起信。

如望答曰：『予惟以水授洗、第有先我而成、後我而至者、其人立於爾曹之中、而爾曹不之識、吾雖為之釋履帶、亦非所稱也。』此事之經過、乃在約但河外之伯大尼如望授洗處。翌日、如望見耶穌來就。乃曰：『此除免世罪、天主之羔羊也！予嘗云後我而至、先我而成者、即斯人矣！渠非予所素識、惟予之來茲授洗、正為顯揚斯人於義塞之民耳。』如望又為之作證、曰：『予見聖神作鴿狀、自天而降、棲止其上。予雖未之素識、惟遣予授洗者曾誥予曰：「汝見聖神降臨、止於其身者、是即將以聖神授洗者也。」予既見之、爰證其為天主之聖子。』又次日、如望偕二徒立、見耶穌經過、注視之而告其徒曰：『爾其識之、天主之羔羊也！』

『曠野有人、揚聲而呼：為主清道、正直其途。』

將引義塞子孫群歸其所天之主、以伊理藹之風度神力為主前驅、必使為父者之心歸向兒女、而頑強之子服膺長者之智、為主作育心悅誠服之新民。』

先知意灑雅所言：『曠野有人、揚聲而呼；為主備道、正直其途；』即斯人也。
