他說：“我就是在曠野呼喊者的聲音：‘修直主的路！’正如以賽亞先知所說的。”

你們自己可以為我作證：我曾說，我不是基督，不過是奉差遣作他的先鋒的。娶新娘的是新郎。新郎的好友站在那裡聽著，聽見新郎的聲音就非常喜樂。因此，我這喜樂滿溢了！他必興旺，我必衰微。“那從天上來的，是在萬有之上；從地上來的，是屬於地，所講的也是屬於地。那從天上來的，是超越萬有之上。他把所見所聞的見證出來，可是沒有人接受他的見證。那接受他的見證的，就確認神是真的。神所差來的那一位講神的話，因為神把聖靈無限地賜給他。父愛子，已經把萬有交在他手裡。信子的，有永生；不信從子的，必不得見永生，神的震怒卻常在他身上。”

孩子啊，你要稱為至高者的先知，因為你要行在主的面前，預備他的路，使他的子民，因罪得赦，就知道救恩。因我們神的憐憫，使清晨的陽光從高天臨到我們，光照那坐在黑暗中死蔭裡的人，引導我們的腳，走上平安的路。”

他來是要作見證，就是為光作見證，使眾人藉著他可以相信。

約翰回答：“我是用水施洗，但有一位站在你們中間，是你們不認識的；他是在我以後來的，我就是給他解鞋帶也不配。”這些事發生在約旦河東的伯大尼，約翰施洗的地方。第二天，約翰見耶穌迎面而來，就說：“看哪，神的羊羔，是除去世人的罪孽的！這一位就是我所說的：‘有一個人，是在我以後來的，位分比我高，因為他本來是在我以前的。’我本來不認識他，但為了要把他顯明給以色列人，因此我來用水施洗。”約翰又作見證說：“我曾看見聖靈，好像鴿子從天上降下來，停留在他的身上。我本來不認識他，但那差我來用水施洗的對我說：‘你看見聖靈降下來，停留在誰身上，誰就是用聖靈施洗的。’我看見了，就作見證說：‘這就是神的兒子。’”過了一天，約翰和他的兩個門徒又站在那裡。約翰看見耶穌走過的時候，就說：“看哪，神的羊羔！”

在曠野有呼喊者的聲音：‘預備主的道，修直他的路！’”

他要使許多以色列人轉向主他們的神。他必有以利亞的靈和能力，行在主的前面，叫父親的心轉向兒女，叫悖逆的轉向義人的意念，為主安排那預備好了的人民。”

以賽亞先知所說：“在曠野有呼喊者的聲音：‘預備主的道，修直他的路！’”就是指著這約翰說的。

他要使父親的心轉向兒女，兒女的心轉向父親，免得我來擊打這地，以至完全毀滅。”（本章第1~6節在《馬索拉文本》為3:19~24）

必有人說：“你們要填高，要填高，要修平道路；把障礙物從我子民的路上除掉。”

你們要經過，要從城門經過，預備人民的道路；你們要填高，要填高大道。要撿去石頭、向萬民豎立旗幟。
