He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

我從前也不認識他；但是為要使他向以色列顯明出來；故此我來用水施洗。』約翰作見證說：『我見過聖靈、彷彿鴿子、從天上降下，停在耶穌上頭。我從前也不認識他；但那差我用水施洗的對我說：「你看見靈降下、停在誰上頭，誰就是那用聖靈施洗的。」

我是用水給你們洗，叫你們悔改的；但在我以後來的那一位呢、比我有力量，他的鞋我不配提的，他必用聖靈與火給你們洗。

那時耶路撒冷和全猶太、跟約但河全周圍地區的人、連續地出去到約翰那裏，承認他們的罪，在約但河裏受約翰的洗。

這些事是在約但河外的伯大尼、約翰施洗的地方、發生的。

保羅說：『約翰是用悔改的洗禮施洗的；他告訴人要信那在他以後來的，就是要信耶穌。』

如今為甚麼躭延呢？起來領洗，洗淨你的罪，呼求他的名。」

在耶穌進來以前、約翰已經豫先向以色列眾民宣傳悔改的洗禮了。
