John replied,“ If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”

Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.“ Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.Then when you call, the Lord will answer.‘ Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.“ Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors!Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well watered garden, like an ever flowing spring.

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion— how can God’s love be in that person?

Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.

When Jesus heard his answer, he said,“ There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

“‘ King Nebuchadnezzar, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past and be merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.’

Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing,and you say,“ Good bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”— but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.Now someone may argue,“ Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say,“ How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.And so it happened just as the Scriptures say:“ Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road.Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

Cornelius stared at him in terror.“ What is it, sir?” he asked the angel. And the angel replied,“ Your prayers and gifts to the poor have been received by God as an offering!

He was a devout, God fearing man, as was everyone in his household. He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.

Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said,“ I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”

Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over.

Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor.

For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will.They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the gift for the believers in Jerusalem.They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do.So we have urged Titus, who encouraged your giving in the first place, to return to you and encourage you to finish this ministry of giving.Since you excel in so many ways— in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us— I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.I am not commanding you to do this. But I am testing how genuine your love is by comparing it with the eagerness of the other churches.You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.Here is my advice: It would be good for you to finish what you started a year ago. Last year you were the first who wanted to give, and you were the first to begin doing it.Now you should finish what you started. Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving. Give in proportion to what you have.Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have.Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. I only mean that there should be some equality.Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later, they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In this way, things will be equal.

“ It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.But Jesus replied,“ Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.

“ And the King will say,‘ I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

He told me,‘ Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your gifts to the poor have been noticed by God!

For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do.
