Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.“ If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk,and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him,“ You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Therefore, Your Majesty, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed. It may be that then your prosperity will continue.”

Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.If one of you says to them,“ Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.But someone will say,“ You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that— and shudder.You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.And the scripture was fulfilled that says,“ Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Cornelius stared at him in fear.“ What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered,“ Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.

He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,“ Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

But now as for what is inside you— be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.

Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.

For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people.And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part.But since you excel in everything— in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you— see that you also excel in this grace of giving.I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality.At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality,

It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.“ Leave her alone,” said Jesus.“ Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.

“ The King will reply,‘ Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

and said,‘ Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
