玛丽亚却站在墓穴外面哭。她哭着，弯腰往墓穴里看，看见两位身穿白衣的天使，坐在原来安放耶稣遗体的地方，一位在头的地方，一位在脚的地方。天使们问她：“妇人，你为什么哭？”她说：“因为他们把我的主挪走了，我不知道他们把他放在哪里。”说了这些话，她转过身来，看见耶稣站在那里，却没有认出他就是耶稣。耶稣说：“妇人，你为什么哭呢？你在找谁？”玛丽亚以为他是园丁，就对他说：“先生，如果是你把他抬走的，就请告诉我，你把他放在哪里了，我好把他取回来。”耶稣对她说：“玛丽亚！”她转过身，用希伯来语对耶稣说：“拉波尼！”——这意思是“老师”。耶稣说：“不要碰我，因为我还没有上到父那里。你到我弟兄们那里去告诉他们：我要上到我的父那里，他也是你们的父；我要上到我的神那里，他也是你们的神。”茉大拉的玛丽亚就去告诉门徒们：“我看到主了！”她又把耶稣对她说的这些话告诉他们。

在一周头一天的清晨，耶稣复活以后，首先向茉大拉的玛丽亚显现。耶稣曾经从她身上赶出了七个鬼魔。她去告诉那些向来与耶稣在一起的人，他们正在悲伤、哀哭。他们听见耶稣活了，又被玛丽亚看到了，却是不相信。
