安息日將盡，七日的頭一日，天快亮的時候，抹大拉的馬利亞和那個馬利亞來看墳墓。忽然，地大震動；因為有主的使者從天上下來，把石頭滾開，坐在上面。他的相貌如同閃電，衣服潔白如雪。看守的人就因他嚇得渾身亂戰，甚至和死人一樣。天使對婦女說：「不要害怕！我知道你們是尋找那釘十字架的耶穌。他不在這裏，照他所說的，已經復活了。你們來看安放主的地方。快去告訴他的門徒，說他從死裏復活了，並且在你們以先往加利利去，在那裏你們要見他。看哪，我已經告訴你們了。」婦女們就急忙離開墳墓，又害怕，又大大地歡喜，跑去要報給他的門徒。

還有被惡鬼所附、被疾病所累、已經治好的幾個婦女，內中有稱為抹大拉的馬利亞（曾有七個鬼從她身上趕出來），又有希律的家宰苦撒的妻子約亞拿，並蘇撒拿，和好些別的婦女，都是用自己的財物供給耶穌和門徒。

有好些婦女在那裏，遠遠地觀看；她們是從加利利跟隨耶穌來服事他的。內中有抹大拉的馬利亞，又有雅各和約西的母親馬利亞，並有西庇太兩個兒子的母親。

過了安息日，抹大拉的馬利亞和雅各的母親馬利亞並撒羅米，買了香膏要去膏耶穌的身體。七日的第一日清早，出太陽的時候，她們來到墳墓那裏，彼此說：「誰給我們把石頭從墓門滾開呢？」那石頭原來很大，她們擡頭一看，卻見石頭已經滾開了。她們進了墳墓，看見一個少年人坐在右邊，穿着白袍，就甚驚恐。那少年人對她們說：「不要驚恐！你們尋找那釘十字架的拿撒勒人耶穌，他已經復活了，不在這裏。請看安放他的地方。你們可以去告訴他的門徒和彼得，說：『他在你們以先往加利利去。在那裏你們要見他，正如他從前所告訴你們的。』」她們就出來，從墳墓那裏逃跑，又發抖又驚奇，甚麼也不告訴人，因為她們害怕。
