安息日剛過，週日黎明時分，抹大拉的瑪麗亞和另一位瑪麗亞一同到墳墓去察看。突然，大地劇烈地震動，上帝的天使從天而降，推開堵著墓穴的石頭，坐在上面。他的容貌如閃電，衣裳潔白如雪。看守墓穴的衛兵嚇得要死，渾身發抖。天使對那兩個女人說：「不要怕，我知道你們是在找那位被釘十字架的耶穌。祂不在這裡，正如祂所說的，祂已經復活了。你們來看，這是安放祂的地方。現在你們快回去，把這消息告訴祂的門徒，祂已經從死裡復活，先你們一步去了加利利，你們將在那裡見到祂。記住，我已經告訴你們了。」她們聽了又驚又喜，連忙離開墳墓，跑去告訴門徒。

還有幾個曾被邪靈和疾病纏身、現在已被醫治的婦女。其中有抹大拉的瑪麗亞，耶穌曾經從她身上趕出七個鬼，還有希律的管家苦撒的妻子約亞娜，此外還有蘇珊娜等其他婦女。她們用自己的錢財資助耶穌和門徒。

有好些婦女在遠處觀看，她們從加利利就跟隨了耶穌，服事祂。其中有抹大拉的瑪麗亞、雅各和約西的母親瑪麗亞以及西庇太兩個兒子的母親。

過了安息日，抹大拉的瑪麗亞、雅各的母親瑪麗亞和撒羅米買了香料，要去抹耶穌的遺體。週日清早，太陽剛剛升起，她們就去墳墓那裡。途中她們彼此議論說：「誰能替我們滾開墓口那塊大石頭呢？」她們抬頭一看，那塊大石頭已經滾到一旁。她們進了墳墓，看見一位身穿潔白長袍的青年坐在右邊，嚇了一跳。那青年對她們說：「不要害怕，你們要找那位被釘十字架的拿撒勒人耶穌嗎？祂已經復活了，不在這裡。你們看！這是安放祂的地方。你們快回去，告訴祂的門徒，特別是彼得，『祂先你們一步去了加利利，你們將在那裡見到祂，正如祂以前所說的一樣。』」她們從墳墓出來，跑走了，戰戰兢兢，疑惑不已，什麼也沒有告訴他人，因為她們很害怕。
