Jesus said,“ Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.” The soldiers divided up his clothes by casting lots.

耶穌曰、父歟、赦之、蓋彼不知所為也、兵卒鬮分其衣、

耶穌曰、父乎、眾不知所為、其赦之、人鬮分其衣、

耶穌曰：『父乎、眾不知其所為、祈寬赦之。』

Jesus said,“ Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Then Jesus said,“ Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided his clothes and cast lots.

[ But Jesus said,“ Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”] Then they threw dice to divide his clothes.

Jesus said,“ Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots.

But here is what I tell you. Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you.

Don’t pay back evil with evil. Don’t pay back unkind words with unkind words. Instead, pay back evil with kind words. This is what you have been chosen to do. You will receive a blessing by doing this.

Then he fell on his knees. He cried out,“ Lord! Don’t hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he died.

But suppose you receive a beating for doing wrong, and you put up with it. Will anyone honor you for this? Of course not. But suppose you suffer for doing good, and you put up with it. God will praise you for this.You were chosen to do good even if you suffer. That’s because Christ suffered for you. He left you an example that he expects you to follow.Scripture says,“ He didn’t commit any sin. No lies ever came out of his mouth.”( Isaiah 53:9)People shouted at him and made fun of him. But he didn’t do the same thing back to them. When he suffered, he didn’t say he would make them suffer. Instead, he trusted in the God who judges fairly.

None of the rulers of this world understood God’s wisdom. If they had, they would not have nailed the Lord of glory to the cross.

“ But here is what I tell you who are listening. Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.Bless those who call down curses on you. And pray for those who treat you badly.

Bless those who hurt you. Bless them, and do not curse them.

They divide up my clothes among them. They cast lots for what I am wearing.

He said,‘ Here’s what you must say to Joseph. Tell him,“ I’m asking you to forgive your brothers. Forgive the terrible things they did to you. Forgive them for treating you so badly.” ’ Now then, please forgive our sins. We serve the God of your father.” When their message came to Joseph, he wept.

So I will give him a place of honor among those who are great. He will be rewarded just like others who win the battle. That’s because he was willing to give his life as a sacrifice. He was counted among those who had committed crimes. He took the sins of many people on himself. And he gave his life for those who had done what is wrong.”

“ My fellow Israelites, I know you didn’t realize what you were doing. Neither did your leaders.

I used to speak evil things against Jesus. I tried to hurt his followers. I really pushed them around. But God showed me mercy anyway. I did those things without knowing any better. I wasn’t a believer.

We work hard with our own hands. When others curse us, we bless them. When we are attacked, we put up with it.

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin.Whoever hates me hates my Father also.I did works among them that no one else did. If I hadn’t, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen those works. And still they have hated both me and my Father.

The Roman commander saw what had happened. He praised God and said,“ Jesus was surely a man who did what was right.”The people had gathered to watch this sight. When they saw what happened, they felt very sad. Then they went away.

When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes. They divided them into four parts. Each soldier got one part. All that was left was Jesus’ long, inner robe. It did not have any seams. It was made out of one piece of cloth from top to bottom.“ Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another.“ Let’s cast lots to see who will get it.” This happened so that Scripture would come true. It says,“ They divided up my clothes among them. They cast lots for what I was wearing.”( Psalm 22:18) So that is what the soldiers did.

At that time Jesus said,“ I praise you, Father. You are Lord of heaven and earth. You have hidden these things from wise and educated people. But you have shown them to little children.

“ Suppose a servant knows the master’s wishes. But the servant doesn’t get ready and doesn’t do what the master wants. Then that servant will receive a heavy beating.But suppose the servant does not know his master’s wishes. And suppose the servant does things for which he should be punished. He will receive a lighter beating. Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. Even more will be asked of the person who is supposed to take care of much.

They nailed him to the cross. Then they divided up his clothes. They cast lots to see what each of them would get.

Jesus answered,“ You were given power from heaven. If you weren’t, you would have no power over me. So the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

In their camp some of them became jealous of Moses and Aaron. Aaron had been set apart to serve the Lord.The ground opened up and swallowed Dathan. It buried Abiram and his followers.Fire blazed among all of them. Flames destroyed those evil people.At Mount Horeb they made a metal statue of a bull calf. They worshiped that statue of a god.They traded their glorious God for a statue of a bull that eats grass.They forgot the God who saved them. They forgot the God who had done great things in Egypt.They forgot the miracles he did in the land of Ham. They forgot the wonderful things he did by the Red Sea.So he said he would destroy them. But Moses, his chosen one, stood up for them. He kept God’s anger from destroying them.

When they had nailed him to the cross, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.They sat down and kept watch over him there.
