They began to state their case:“ This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king.”

And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”

They began to bring charges against Jesus. They said,“ We have found this man misleading our people. He is against paying taxes to Caesar. And he claims to be Messiah, a king.”

And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”

They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”

And they began to bring charges against Him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”

Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted,“ If you release this man, you are no‘ friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.”

Not finding them there, they dragged out Jason and some of the other believers instead and took them before the city council.“ Paul and Silas have caused trouble all over the world,” they shouted,“ and now they are here disturbing our city, too.And Jason has welcomed them into his home. They are all guilty of treason against Caesar, for they profess allegiance to another king, named Jesus.”

and he announced his verdict.“ You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.

And then seat two scoundrels across from him who will accuse him of cursing God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.”So the elders and other town leaders followed the instructions Jezebel had written in the letters.They called for a fast and put Naboth at a prominent place before the people.Then the two scoundrels came and sat down across from him. And they accused Naboth before all the people, saying,“ He cursed God and the king.” So he was dragged outside the town and stoned to death.

I got rid of their three evil shepherds in a single month. But I became impatient with these sheep, and they hated me, too.

But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.

So these officials went to the king and said,“ Sir, this man must die! That kind of talk will undermine the morale of the few fighting men we have left, as well as that of all the people. This man is a traitor!”

“ The whole city is in an uproar because of these Jews!” they shouted to the city officials.“ They are teaching customs that are illegal for us Romans to practice.”

“ We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” they retorted.

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

They plan to topple me from my high position. They delight in telling lies about me. They praise me to my face but curse me in their hearts. Interlude

We have found this man to be a troublemaker who is constantly stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the cult known as the Nazarenes.

“ Well, then,” Jesus said,“ give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” His reply completely amazed them.

But from now on the Son of Man will be seated in the place of power at God’s right hand.”They all shouted,“ So, are you claiming to be the Son of God?” And he replied,“ You say that I am.”

But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him,“ Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”Jesus said,“ I Am. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes,and Pilate asked him,“ Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?”But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.

“ Caesar’s,” they replied.“ Well, then,” he said,“ give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.”

They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows.They shoot from ambush at the innocent, attacking suddenly and fearlessly.They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps in secret.“ Who will ever notice?” they ask.As they plot their crimes, they say,“ We have devised the perfect plan!” Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning.

Then they became insistent.“ But he is causing riots by his teaching wherever he goes— all over Judea, from Galilee to Jerusalem!”

Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death.But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, they could not use anyone’s testimony. Finally, two men came forward

Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.

Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus.“ Teacher,” they said,“ we know that you speak and teach what is right and are not influenced by what others think. You teach the way of God truthfully.Now tell us— is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”He saw through their trickery and said,“ Show me a Roman coin. Whose picture and title are stamped on it?”“ Caesar’s,” they replied.“ Well then,” he said,“ give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.”

Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any.Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other.

However, we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.”

But as he was walking through the Benjamin Gate, a sentry arrested him and said,“ You are defecting to the Babylonians!” The sentry making the arrest was Irijah son of Shelemiah, grandson of Hananiah.“ That’s not true!” Jeremiah protested.“ I had no intention of doing any such thing.” But Irijah wouldn’t listen, and he took Jeremiah before the officials.They were furious with Jeremiah and had him flogged and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary. Jonathan’s house had been converted into a prison.

These men cannot prove the things they accuse me of doing.

Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent a message to Jeroboam, king of Israel:“ Amos is hatching a plot against you right here on your very doorstep! What he is saying is intolerable.

When Ahab saw him, he exclaimed,“ So, is it really you, you troublemaker of Israel?”

Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him.“ Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him.Jesus replied,“ Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?”“ Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted.“ Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”Jesus answered,“ My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”Pilate said,“ So you are a king?” Jesus responded,“ You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”
