Pilate let Barabbas go free. But he had Jesus whipped. Then he handed him over to be nailed to a cross.

Pilate spoke to them for the third time.“ Why?” he asked.“ What wrong has this man done? I have found no reason to have him put to death. So I will just have him whipped and let him go.”

Pilate wanted to satisfy the crowd. So he let Barabbas go free. He ordered that Jesus be whipped. Then he handed him over to be nailed to a cross.

But Paul replied to the officers.“ They beat us in public,” he said.“ We weren’t given a trial. And we are Roman citizens! They threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and personally lead us out.”

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped.The soldiers twisted thorns together to make a crown. They put it on Jesus’ head. Then they put a purple robe on him.They went up to him again and again. They kept saying,“ We honor you, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.Once more Pilate came out. He said to the Jews gathered there,“ Look, I am bringing Jesus out to you. I want to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”

His speech won the leaders over. They called the apostles in and had them whipped. The leaders ordered them not to speak in Jesus’ name. Then they let the apostles go.The apostles were full of joy as they left the Sanhedrin. They considered it an honor to suffer shame for the name of Jesus.

But the servant was pierced because we had sinned. He was crushed because we had done what was evil. He was punished to make us whole again. His wounds have healed us.
