The people surrounded him and asked,“ How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”Jesus replied,“ I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name.But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep.

“ Look!” the man exclaimed.“ I told you once. Didn’t you listen? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?”Then they cursed him and said,“ You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!

“ You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.“ Your approval means nothing to me,because I know you don’t have God’s love within you.For I have come to you in my Father’s name, and you have rejected me. Yet if others come in their own name, you gladly welcome them.No wonder you can’t believe! For you gladly honor each other, but you don’t care about the honor that comes from the one who alone is God.“ Yet it isn’t I who will accuse you before the Father. Moses will accuse you! Yes, Moses, in whom you put your hopes.If you really believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me.But since you don’t believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”

Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me!For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me!

But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him,“ I demand in the name of the living God— tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”Jesus replied,“ You have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said,“ Blasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy.What is your verdict?”“ Guilty!” they shouted.“ He deserves to die!”Then they began to spit in Jesus’ face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him,jeering,“ Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?”

“ Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”Jesus told them,“ Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”

But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him.This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted:“ Lord, who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?”But the people couldn’t believe, for as Isaiah also said,“ The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts— so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.”Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah’s glory.Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.

But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him,“ Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”Jesus said,“ I Am. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said,“ Why do we need other witnesses?You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?”“ Guilty!” they all cried.“ He deserves to die!”Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists.“ Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away.Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came by

“ But Abraham said,‘ If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
