The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.

There were men guarding Jesus. They began laughing at him and beating him.

And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying,“ Do You answer the high priest like that?”

Thus says the Lord, The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, To Him whom man despises, To Him whom the nation abhors, To the Servant of rulers:“ Kings shall see and arise, Princes also shall worship, Because of the Lord who is faithful, The Holy One of Israel; And He has chosen You.”

He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.

But in my adversity they rejoiced And gathered together; Attackers gathered against me, And I did not know it; They tore at me and did not cease;With ungodly mockers at feasts They gnashed at me with their teeth.

Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; Shame has covered my face.I have become a stranger to my brothers, And an alien to my mother’s children;Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, That became my reproach.I also made sackcloth my garment; I became a byword to them.Those who sit in the gate speak against me, And I am the song of the drunkards.

Let them not say in their hearts,“ Ah, so we would have it!” Let them not say,“ We have swallowed him up.”

Now gather yourself in troops, O daughter of troops; He has laid siege against us; They will strike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.

Just as many were astonished at you, So His visage was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men;

Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,and began to salute Him,“ Hail, King of the Jews!”Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their headsand saying,“ You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said,“ He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.

“ And now I am their taunting song; Yes, I am their byword.They abhor me, they keep far from me; They do not hesitate to spit in my face.Because He has loosed my bowstring and afflicted me, They have cast off restraint before me.At my right hand the rabble arises; They push away my feet, And they raise against me their ways of destruction.They break up my path, They promote my calamity; They have no helper.They come as broad breakers; Under the ruinous storm they roll along.

He tears me in His wrath, and hates me; He gnashes at me with His teeth; My adversary sharpens His gaze on me.They gape at me with their mouth, They strike me reproachfully on the cheek, They gather together against me.

But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men, and despised by the people.All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death,but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forwardand said,“ This fellow said,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’”And the high priest arose and said to Him,“ Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?”But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him,“ I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”Jesus said to him,“ It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying,“ He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!What do you think?” They answered and said,“ He is deserving of death.”Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands,saying,“ Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”

They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion.

And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying,“ Hail, King of the Jews!”Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.

who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;

looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.“ For the Lord GOD will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.

Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying,“ We heard Him say,‘ I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’”But not even then did their testimony agree.And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying,“ Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?”But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him,“ Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”Jesus said,“ I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,“ What further need do we have of witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him,“ Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.
