The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.

There were men guarding Jesus. They began laughing at him and beating him.

Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him.

The guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating him.

When Jesus had said this, one of the high priest’s officers who stood nearby struck him on the face and said,“ Is that the way you answer the high priest?”

This is what the LORD, the protector of Israel, their Holy One, says to the one who is despised and rejected by nations, a servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and rise in respect, princes will bow down, because of the faithful LORD, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen you.”

He was despised and rejected by people, one who experienced pain and was acquainted with illness; people hid their faces from him; he was despised, and we considered him insignificant.

And they crucified two outlaws with him, one on his right and one on his left.

But when I stumbled, they rejoiced and gathered together; they gathered together to ambush me. They tore at me without stopping to rest.When I tripped, they taunted me relentlessly, and tried to bite me.

For I suffer humiliation for your sake and am thoroughly disgraced.My own brothers treat me like a stranger; they act as if I were a foreigner.Certainly zeal for your house consumes me; I endure the insults of those who insult you.I weep and refrain from eating food, which causes others to insult me.I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me.Those who sit at the city gate gossip about me; drunkards mock me in their songs.

Do not let them say to themselves,“ Aha! We have what we wanted!” Do not let them say,“ We have devoured him!”

( 4: 14) But now slash yourself, daughter surrounded by soldiers! We are besieged! With a scepter they strike Israel’s ruler on the side of his face.

( just as many were horrified by the sight of you) he was so disfigured he no longer looked like a man;

So the soldiers led him into the palace( that is, the governor’s residence) and called together the whole cohort.They put a purple cloak on him and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him.They began to salute him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him.When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their headsand saying,“ You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are God’s Son, come down from the cross!”In the same way even the chief priests– together with the experts in the law and elders– were mocking him:“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the king of Israel! If he comes down now from the cross, we will believe in him!He trusts in God– let God, if he wants to, deliver him now because he said,‘ I am God’s Son’!”The robbers who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.

“ And now I have become their taunt song; I have become a byword among them.They detest me and maintain their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.Because God has untied my tent cord and afflicted me, people throw off all restraint in my presence.On my right the young rabble rise up; they drive me from place to place, and build up siege ramps against me.They destroy my path; they succeed in destroying me without anyone assisting them.They come in as through a wide breach; amid the crash they come rolling in.

His anger has torn me and persecuted me; he has gnashed at me with his teeth; my adversary locks his eyes on me.People have opened their mouths against me, they have struck my cheek in scorn; they unite together against me.

But I am a worm, not a man; people insult me and despise me.All who see me taunt me; they mock me and shake their heads.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were trying to find false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death.But they did not find anything, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forwardand declared,“ This man said,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”So the high priest stood up and said to him,“ Have you no answer? What is this that they are testifying against you?”But Jesus was silent. The high priest said to him,“ I charge you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”Jesus said to him,“ You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and declared,“ He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Now you have heard the blasphemy!What is your verdict?” They answered,“ He is guilty and deserves death.”Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him,saying,“ Prophesy for us, you Christ! Who hit you?”

They open their mouths to devour me like a roaring lion that rips its prey.

They stripped him and put a scarlet robe around him,and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand, and kneeling down before him, they mocked him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”They spat on him and took the staff and struck him repeatedly on the head.When they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

When he was maligned, he did not answer back; when he suffered, he threatened no retaliation, but committed himself to God who judges justly.

keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

I offered my back to those who attacked, my jaws to those who tore out my beard; I did not hide my face from insults and spitting.But the sovereign LORD helps me, so I am not humiliated. For that reason I am steadfastly resolved; I know I will not be put to shame.

What is this that they are testifying against you?”But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him,“ Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”“ I am,” said Jesus,“ and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,“ Why do we still need witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy! What is your verdict?” They all condemned him as deserving death.Then some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying,“ Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat him.
