The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.

There were men guarding Jesus. They began laughing at him and beating him.

Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him.

Now the men who were holding Jesus under guard began to mock him and beat him.

But when He said this, one of the officers, who was standing nearby, struck Jesus, saying,“ Is that the way You answer the high priest?”

This is what the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One, Says to the despised One, To the One abhorred by the nation, To the Servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and arise, Princes will also bow down, Because of the Lord who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You.”

He was despised and abandoned by men, A man of great pain and familiar with sickness; And like one from whom people hide their faces, He was despised, and we had no regard for Him.

And they* crucified two rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.

But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; The afflicted people whom I did not know gathered together against me, They slandered me without ceasing.Like godless jesters at a feast, They gnashed at me with their teeth.

Because for Your sake I have endured disgrace; Dishonor has covered my face.I have become estranged from my brothers, And a stranger to my mother’s sons.For zeal for Your house has consumed me, And the taunts of those who taunt You have fallen on me.When I wept in my soul with fasting, It became my disgrace.When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a proverb to them.Those who sit in the gate talk about me, And songs of mockery by those habitually drunk are about me.

Do not let them say in their heart,“ Aha, our desire!” Do not let them say,“ We have swallowed him up!”

“ Now muster yourselves in troops, daughter of troops; They have laid siege against us; With a rod they will strike the judge of Israel on the cheek.

Just as many were appalled at you, My people, So His appearance was marred beyond that of a man, And His form beyond the sons of mankind.

Now the soldiers took Him away into the palace( that is, the Praetorium), and they* called together the whole Roman cohort.And they* dressed Him in purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;and they began saluting Him:“ Hail, King of the Jews!”And they repeatedly beat His head with a reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him.And after they had mocked Him, they took the purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they* led Him out to crucify Him.

And those passing by were speaking abusively to Him, shaking their heads,and saying,“ You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,“ He saved others; He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He takes pleasure in Him; for He said,‘ I am the Son of God.’ ”And the rebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same way.

“ And now I have become their taunt, And I have become a byword to them.They loathe me and stand aloof from me, And they do not refrain from spitting in my face.Because He has undone my bowstring and afflicted me, They have cast off the bridle before me.On the right hand their mob arises; They push aside my feet and pile up their ways of destruction against me.They break up my path, They promote my destruction; No one restrains them.As through a wide gap they come, Amid the storm they roll on.

His anger has torn me and hunted me down, He has gnashed at me with His teeth; My enemy glares at me.They have gaped at me with their mouths, They have slapped me on the cheek with contempt; They have massed themselves against me.

But I am a worm and not a person, A disgrace of mankind and despised by the people.All who see me deride me; They sneer, they shake their heads, saying,

Now the chief priests and the entire Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward,and said,“ This man stated,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.’ ”The high priest stood up and said to Him,“ Do You offer no answer for what these men are testifying against You?”But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him,“ I place You under oath by the living God, to tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”Jesus* said to him,“ You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy;what do you think?” They answered,“ He deserves death!”Then they spit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him,and said,“ Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

They open their mouths wide at me, As a ravening and roaring lion.

And they stripped Him and put a red cloak on Him.And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying,“ Hail, King of the Jews!”And they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head.And after they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

and while being abusively insulted, He did not insult in return; while suffering, He did not threaten, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;

looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pull out My beard; I did not hide My face from insults and spitting.For the Lord God helps Me, Therefore, I am not disgraced; Therefore, I have made My face like flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.

Now the chief priests and the entire Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent.And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying,“ We heard Him say,‘ I will destroy this temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.’ ”And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent.And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying,“ Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?”But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and* said to Him,“ Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”And Jesus said,“ I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Tearing his clothes, the high priest* said,“ What further need do we have of witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.And some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him,“ Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him and slapped Him in the face.
