The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.

There were men guarding Jesus. They began laughing at him and beating him.

Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him.

The guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating him.

When He had said these things, one of the temple police standing by slapped Jesus, saying,“ Is this the way you answer the high priest?”

This is what the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, says to one who is despised, to one abhorred by people, to a servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and stand up, and princes will bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel— and He has chosen you.”

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.

They crucified two criminals with Him, one on His right and one on His left.

But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; they gathered against me. Assailants I did not know tore at me and did not stop.With godless mockery they gnashed their teeth at me.

For I have endured insults because of You, and shame has covered my face.I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sonsbecause zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me.I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults.I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them.Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me.

Do not let them say in their hearts,“ Aha! Just what we wanted.” Do not let them say,“ We have swallowed him up!”

Now, daughter who is under attack, you slash yourself in grief; a siege is set against us! They are striking the judge of Israel on the cheek with a rod.

Just as many were appalled at You— His appearance was so disfigured that He did not look like a man, and His form did not resemble a human being—

Then the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard( that is, headquarters) and called the whole company together.They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on Him.And they began to salute Him,“ Hail, King of the Jews!”They kept hitting Him on the head with a reed and spitting on Him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying Him homage.When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the purple robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their headsand saying,“ The One who would demolish the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him and said,“ He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.He has put His trust in God; let God rescue Him now— if He wants Him! For He said,‘ I am God’s Son.’”In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with Him kept taunting Him.

Now I am mocked by their songs; I have become an object of scorn to them.They despise me and keep their distance from me; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.Because God has loosened my bowstring and oppressed me, they have cast off restraint in my presence.The rabble rise up at my right; they trap my feet and construct their siege ramp against me.They tear up my path; they contribute to my destruction, without anyone to help them.They advance as through a gaping breach; they keep rolling in through the ruins.

His anger tears at me, and He harasses me. He gnashes His teeth at me. My enemy pierces me with His eyes.They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join themselves together against me.

But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by people.Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads:

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so they could put Him to death.But they could not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two who came forwardstated,“ This man said,‘ I can demolish God’s sanctuary and rebuild it in three days.’”The high priest then stood up and said to Him,“ Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?”But Jesus kept silent. Then the high priest said to Him,“ By the living God I place You under oath: tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God!”“ You have said it,” Jesus told him.“ But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Look, now you’ve heard the blasphemy!What is your decision?” They answered,“ He deserves death!”Then they spit in His face and beat Him; others slapped Himand said,“ Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who hit You?”

They open their mouths against me— lions, mauling and roaring.

They stripped Him and dressed Him in a scarlet military robe.They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and placed a reed in His right hand. And they knelt down before Him and mocked Him:“ Hail, King of the Jews!”Then they spit on Him, took the reed, and kept hitting Him on the head.When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

when He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He was suffering, He did not threaten but entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly.

keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.

I gave My back to those who beat Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spitting.The Lord God will help Me; therefore I have not been humiliated; therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they could find none.For many were giving false testimony against Him, but the testimonies did not agree.Some stood up and were giving false testimony against Him, stating,“ We heard Him say,‘ I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’”Yet their testimony did not agree even on this.Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus,“ Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?”But He kept silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest questioned Him,“ Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”“ I am,” said Jesus,“ and all of you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ Why do we still need witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy! What is your decision?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying,“ Prophesy!” The temple police also took Him and slapped Him.
