For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table? But I am among you as the One who serves.

孰為大、席坐者乎、役事者乎、非席坐者大乎、然我在爾中如役事者也、

孰為長、席坐者乎、役事者乎、非席坐者長乎、然我在爾中、如役事者也、

孰為大、席坐者乎、抑役事者乎、非席坐者乎、然我在爾曹中、如役事者也、

夫坐席者與侍奉者孰大？非坐席者乎？然予在爾中、則如侍奉者也。

For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life— a ransom for many.”

Those slaves the master will find alert when he comes will be blessed. I assure you: He will get ready, have them recline at the table, then come and serve them.

Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form,He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross.

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though He was rich, for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich.

“ Which one of you having a slave tending sheep or plowing will say to him when he comes in from the field,‘ Come at once and sit down to eat’?Instead, will he not tell him,‘ Prepare something for me to eat, get ready, and serve me while I eat and drink; later you can eat and drink’?Does he thank that slave because he did what was commanded?

Next, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him.He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him,“ Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”Jesus answered him,“ What I’m doing you don’t understand now, but afterward you will know.”“ You will never wash my feet— ever!” Peter said. Jesus replied,“ If I don’t wash you, you have no part with Me.”Simon Peter said to Him,“ Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.”“ One who has bathed,” Jesus told him,“ doesn’t need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”For He knew who would betray Him. This is why He said,“ You are not all clean.”When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined again and said to them,“ Do you know what I have done for you?You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am.So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you.“ I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.
