The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!”

The Son of Man will go to his death, just as God has already decided. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands him over!”

For it has been determined that the Son of Man must die. But what sorrow awaits the one who betrays him.”

Though he was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.

For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

“ Brothers and sisters, it was necessary that the Scripture be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David foretold about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.For he was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst, his body burst open and his intestines spilled out.This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama( that is,“ Field of Blood”).“ For it is written in the Book of Psalms: Let his dwelling become desolate; let no one live in it; and Let someone else take his position.“ Therefore, from among the men who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us—beginning from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us— from among these, it is necessary that one become a witness with us of his resurrection.”So they proposed two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.Then they prayed,“ You, Lord, know everyone’s hearts; show which of these two you have chosento take the place in this apostolic ministry that Judas left to go where he belongs.”

So he threw the silver into the temple and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.

Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck.I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep water, and a flood sweeps over me.I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. In your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with your sure salvation.Rescue me from the miry mud; don’t let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep water.Don’t let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don’t let the Pit close its mouth over me.Answer me, LORD, for your faithful love is good. In keeping with your abundant compassion, turn to me.Don’t hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly!Come near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies.You know the insults I endure— my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries.Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one.Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.Let their table set before them be a snare, and let it be a trap for their allies.Let their eyes grow too dim to see, and let their hips continually quake.Pour out your rage on them, and let your burning anger overtake them.Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents.For they persecute the one you struck and talk about the pain of those you wounded.Charge them with crime on top of crime; do not let them share in your righteousness.Let them be erased from the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous.But as for me— poor and in pain— let your salvation protect me, God.I will praise God’s name with song and exalt him with thanksgiving.That will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves.The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart!For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners.Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them,for God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah. They will live there and possess it.The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will live in it.

To this very day, I have had help from God, and I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing other than what the prophets and Moses said would take place—that the Messiah would suffer, and that, as the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”

Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and he will provide me here and now with more than twelve legions of angels?How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?”

I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.

They will exploit you in their greed with made-up stories. Their condemnation, pronounced long ago, is not idle, and their destruction does not sleep.

Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him.Though they found no grounds for the death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him killed.

Set a wicked person over him; let an accuser stand at his right hand.When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and let his prayer be counted as sin.Let his days be few; let another take over his position.Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.Let his children wander as beggars, searching for food far from their demolished homes.Let a creditor seize all he has; let strangers plunder what he has worked for.Let no one show him kindness, and let no one be gracious to his fatherless children.Let the line of his descendants be cut off; let their name be blotted out in the next generation.Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and do not let his mother’s sin be blotted out.Let their sins always remain before the LORD, and let him remove all memory of them from the earth.

Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?He grew up before him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at him, no appearance that we should desire him.He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the LORD has punished him for the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth.He was taken away because of oppression and judgment, and who considered his fate? For he was cut off from the land of the living; he was struck because of my people’s rebellion.He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully.Yet the LORD was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the LORD’s pleasure will be accomplished.After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities.Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, because he willingly submitted to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.

Now it is not an enemy who insults me— otherwise I could bear it; it is not a foe who rises up against me— otherwise I could hide from him.But it is you, a man who is my peer, my companion and good friend!We used to have close fellowship; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.Let death take them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, because evil is in their homes and within them.

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? You put me into the dust of death.For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; they pierced my hands and my feet.I can count all my bones; people look and stare at me.They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.But you, LORD, don’t be far away. My strength, come quickly to help me.Rescue my life from the sword, my only life from the power of these dogs.Save me from the lion’s mouth, from the horns of wild oxen. You answered me!I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters; I will praise you in the assembly.You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! All you descendants of Israel, revere him!For he has not despised or abhorred the torment of the oppressed. He did not hide his face from him but listened when he cried to him for help.I will give praise in the great assembly because of you; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear you.The humble will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him. May your hearts live forever!All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD. You said through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David your servant: Why do the Gentiles rage and the peoples plot futile things?The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers assemble together against the Lord and against his Messiah.“ For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,to do whatever your hand and your will had predestined to take place.

Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city— to bring the rebellion to an end, to put a stop to sin, to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until an Anointed One, the ruler, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat, but in difficult times.After those sixty-two weeks the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the coming ruler will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come with a flood, and until the end there will be war; desolations are decreed.

While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.

Sword, awake against my shepherd, against the man who is my associate— this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones.

He said to them,“ How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory?”Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.

They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

He also said to them,“ This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day,
