Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though something strange were happening to you;but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the revelation of His glory you may also rejoice and be overjoyed.If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, and of God, rests upon you.

If, therefore, I am in the wrong and have committed something deserving death, I am not trying to avoid execution; but if there is nothing to the accusations which these men are bringing against me, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar.”Then when Festus had conferred with his council, he answered,“ You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar you shall go.”

Festus, then, after arriving in the province, went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea three days later.And the chief priests and the leading men of the Jews brought charges against Paul, and they were pleading with Festus,

Then the whole city was provoked and the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.While they were intent on killing him, a report came up to the commander of the Roman cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion.

Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church, to do them harm.And he had James the brother of John executed with a sword.When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter as well.( Now these were the days of Unleavened Bread.)When he had arrested him, he put him in prison, turning him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending only after the Passover to bring him before the people.

and the rest seized his slaves and treated them abusively, and then killed them.

“ Regarding all the things of which I am accused by the Jews, King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate that I am about to make my defense before you today,especially because you are an expert in all customs and questions among the Jews; therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently.“ So then, all Jews know my way of life since my youth, which from the beginning was spent among my own nation and in Jerusalem,since they have known about me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that I lived as a Pharisee according to the strictest sect of our religion.And now I am standing trial for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers;the promise to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly serve God night and day. For this hope, O king, I am being accused by Jews.Why is it considered incredible among you people if God raises the dead?“ So I thought to myself that I had to act in strong opposition to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons, after receiving authority from the chief priests, but I also cast my vote against them when they were being put to death.And as I punished them often in all the synagogues, I tried to force them to blaspheme; and since I was extremely enraged at them, I kept pursuing them even to foreign cities.

“ But be on your guard; for they will hand you over to the courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them.And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations.And when they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you at that time; for you are not the ones speaking, but it is the Holy Spirit.And brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.And you will be hated by everyone because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

And they laid hands on them and put them in prison until the next day, for it was already evening.But many of those who had heard the message believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of high priestly descent.When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire,“ By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,

“ Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.And at that time many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another.

But the high priest stood up, along with all his associates( that is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy.They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public prison.But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and leading them out, he said,

They will ban you from the synagogue, yet an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering a service to God.These things they will do because they have not known the Father nor Me.

And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and they came up to him and dragged him away, and brought him before the Council.They put forward false witnesses who said,“ This man does not stop speaking against this holy place and the Law;for we have heard him say that this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses handed down to us.”And all who were sitting in the Council stared at him, and they saw his face, which was like the face of an angel.

The crowd joined in an attack against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely;and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.Now about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were unfastened.

who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God, but hostile to all people,hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they always reach the limit of their sins. But wrath has come upon them fully.

They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.

“ Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be as wary as serpents, and as innocent as doves.But be on guard against people, for they will hand you over to the courts and flog you in their synagogues;and you will even be brought before governors and kings on My account, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given you in that hour.For it is not you who are speaking, but it is the Spirit of your Father who is speaking in you.“ Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.And you will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.“ But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes.“ A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master.It is enough for the disciple that he may become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they insult the members of his household!

But they shouted with loud voices, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one mind.When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and the witnesses laid aside their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”Then he fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice,“ Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he fell asleep.

“ Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,so that upon you will fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Then Agrippa said to Festus,“ I also would like to hear the man myself.”“ Tomorrow,” he* said,“ you shall hear him.”So, on the next day when Agrippa and Bernice came amid great pomp and entered the auditorium, accompanied by the commanders and the prominent men of the city, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought before them.And Festus* said,“ King Agrippa, and all you gentlemen present with us, you see this man about whom all the people of the Jews appealed to me, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.But I found that he had committed nothing deserving death; and since he himself appealed to the Emperor, I decided to send him.

Remember the word that I said to you,‘ A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they followed My word, they will follow yours also.

Now after five days the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an attorney named Tertullus, and they brought charges against Paul to the governor.After Paul had been summoned, Tertullus began accusing him, saying to the governor,“ Since we have attained great peace through you, and since reforms are being carried out for this nation by your foresight,we acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.But, that I may not weary you further, I beg you to grant us a brief hearing, by your kindness.For we have found this man a public menace and one who stirs up dissensions among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.And he even tried to desecrate the temple, so indeed we arrested him.

Now on the next day, wanting to know for certain why Paul had been accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Council to assemble, and he brought Paul down and placed him before them.

and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him,“ Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”

For this reason also, the wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute,so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.’

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
