Saul, however, was ravaging the church. He would enter house after house, drag off men and women, and put them in prison.

Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you, as if something unusual were happening to you.Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

If then I did anything wrong and am deserving of death, I am not trying to escape death; but if there is nothing to what these men accuse me of, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar!”Then after Festus conferred with his council, he replied,“ You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar you will go.”

Three days after Festus arrived in the province, he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.The chief priests and the leaders of the Jews presented their case against Paul to him; and they appealed,

The whole city was stirred up, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul, dragged him out of the temple, and at once the gates were shut.As they were trying to kill him, word went up to the commander of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in chaos.

About that time King Herod violently attacked some who belonged to the church,and he executed James, John’s brother, with the sword.When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter too, during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.After the arrest, he put him in prison and assigned four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover.

while the rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.

“ I consider myself fortunate that it is before you, King Agrippa, I am to make my defense today against all the accusations of the Jews,especially since you are very knowledgeable about all the Jewish customs and controversies. Therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently.“ All the Jews know my way of life from my youth, which was spent from the beginning among my own people and in Jerusalem.They have known me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived as a Pharisee.And now I stand on trial because of the hope in what God promised to our ancestors,the promise our twelve tribes hope to reach as they earnestly serve him night and day. King Agrippa, I am being accused by the Jews because of this hope.Why do any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?In fact, I myself was convinced that it was necessary to do many things in opposition to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.I actually did this in Jerusalem, and I locked up many of the saints in prison, since I had received authority for that from the chief priests. When they were put to death, I was in agreement against them.In all the synagogues I often punished them and tried to make them blaspheme. Since I was terribly enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.

“ But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.And it is necessary that the gospel be preached to all nations.So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say, but say whatever is given to you at that time, for it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.“ Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.

So they seized them and took them into custody until the next day since it was already evening.But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalemwith Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all the members of the high-priestly family.After they had Peter and John stand before them, they began to question them:“ By what power or in what name have you done this?”

Submit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the emperor as the supreme authority

“ Then they will hand you over to be persecuted, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name.Then many will fall away, betray one another, and hate one another.

Then the high priest rose up. He and all who were with him, who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.So they arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail during the night, brought them out, and said,

They will ban you from the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service to God.They will do these things because they haven’t known the Father or me.

They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; so they came, seized him, and took him to the Sanhedrin.They also presented false witnesses who said,“ This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the law.For we heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”And all who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

The crowd joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.After they had severely flogged them, they threw them in jail, ordering the jailer to guard them carefully.Receiving such an order, he put them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains came loose.

who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us. They displease God and are hostile to everyone,by keeping us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. As a result, they are constantly filling up their sins to the limit, and wrath has overtaken them at last.

After they called in the apostles and had them flogged, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.

“ Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts and flog you in their synagogues.You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,because it isn’t you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you.“ Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.A disciple is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master.It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house‘ Beelzebul,’ how much more the members of his household!

They yelled at the top of their voices, covered their ears, and together rushed against him.They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. And the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.While they were stoning Stephen, he called out,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”He knelt down and cried out with a loud voice,“ Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” And after saying this, he fell asleep.

This is why I am sending you prophets, sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.Truly I tell you, all these things will come on this generation.

Agrippa said to Festus,“ I would like to hear the man myself.”“ Tomorrow you will hear him,” he replied.So the next day, Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp and entered the auditorium with the military commanders and prominent men of the city. When Festus gave the command, Paul was brought in.Then Festus said,“ King Agrippa and all men present with us, you see this man. The whole Jewish community has appealed to me concerning him, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he should not live any longer.I found that he had not done anything deserving of death, but when he himself appealed to the Emperor, I decided to send him.

Remember the word I spoke to you:‘ A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

Five days later Ananias the high priest came down with some elders and a lawyer named Tertullus. These men presented their case against Paul to the governor.When Paul was called in, Tertullus began to accuse him and said,“ We enjoy great peace because of you, and reforms are taking place for the benefit of this nation because of your foresight.We acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with utmost gratitude.But, so that I will not burden you any further, I request that you would be kind enough to give us a brief hearing.For we have found this man to be a plague, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the Roman world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.He even tried to desecrate the temple, and so we apprehended him. By examining him yourself you will be able to discern the truth about these charges we are bringing against him.”

The next day, since he wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him and instructed the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to convene. He brought Paul down and placed him before them.

Falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him,“ Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

Because of this, the wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’so that this generation may be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world—from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.“ Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible.

Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will experience affliction for ten days. Be faithful to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.
