He went on to tell the people this parable:“ A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.

He leased it to tenant farmers and went away.When the time came to harvest fruit, he sent his servants to the farmers to collect his fruit.The farmers took his servants, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Again, he sent other servants, more than the first group, and they did the same to them.Finally, he sent his son to them.‘ They will respect my son,’ he said.“ But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said to each other,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?”“ He will completely destroy those terrible men,” they told him,“ and lease his vineyard to other farmers who will give him his fruit at the harvest.”Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is what the Lord has done and it is wonderful in our eyes?Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruit.Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will shatter him.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew he was speaking about them.Although they were looking for a way to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because the people regarded him as a prophet.

He began to speak to them in parables:“ A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug out a pit for a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away.At harvest time he sent a servant to the farmers to collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from them.But they took him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.Again he sent another servant to them, and they hit him on the head and treated him shamefully.Then he sent another, and they killed that one. He also sent many others; some they beat, and others they killed.He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But those tenant farmers said to one another,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill the farmers and give the vineyard to others.Haven’t you read this Scripture: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.This came about from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes?”They were looking for a way to arrest him but feared the crowd because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. So they left him and went away.

I will sing about the one I love, a song about my loved one’s vineyard: The one I love had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.He broke up the soil, cleared it of stones, and planted it with the finest vines. He built a tower in the middle of it and even dug out a winepress there. He expected it to yield good grapes, but it yielded worthless grapes.So now, residents of Jerusalem and men of Judah, please judge between me and my vineyard.What more could I have done for my vineyard than I did? Why, when I expected a yield of good grapes, did it yield worthless grapes?Now I will tell you what I am about to do to my vineyard: I will remove its hedge, and it will be consumed; I will tear down its wall, and it will be trampled.I will make it a wasteland. It will not be pruned or weeded; thorns and briers will grow up. I will also give orders to the clouds that rain should not fall on it.For the vineyard of the LORD of Armies is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah, the plant he delighted in. He expected justice but saw injustice; he expected righteousness but heard cries of despair.

“ I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes, and he prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be my disciples.

You dug up a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.You cleared a place for it; it took root and filled the land.The mountains were covered by its shade, and the mighty cedars with its branches.It sent out sprouts toward the Sea and shoots toward the River.Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its fruit?Boars from the forest tear at it and creatures of the field feed on it.Return, God of Armies. Look down from heaven and see; take care of this vine,

I planted you, a choice vine from the very best seed. How then could you turn into a degenerate, foreign vine?

Solomon owned a vineyard in Baal-hamon. He leased the vineyard to tenants. Each was to bring for his fruit one thousand pieces of silver.I have my own vineyard. The one thousand are for you, Solomon, but two hundred for those who take care of its fruits.

Therefore he said,“ A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king and then to return.

“ For it is just like a man about to go on a journey. He called his own servants and entrusted his possessions to them.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.So, then, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.

“ So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and respected men, and set them over you as leaders: commanders for thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, and officers for your tribes.I commanded your judges at that time: Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge rightly between a man and his brother or his resident alien.Do not show partiality when deciding a case; listen to small and great alike. Do not be intimidated by anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.At that time I commanded you about all the things you were to do.

“ If a case is too difficult for you— concerning bloodshed, lawsuits, or assaults— cases disputed at your city gates, then go up to the place the LORD your God chooses.You are to go to the Levitical priests and to the judge who presides at that time. Ask, and they will give you a verdict in the case.You must abide by the verdict they give you at the place the LORD chooses. Be careful to do exactly as they instruct you.You must abide by the instruction they give you and the verdict they announce to you. Do not turn to the right or the left from the decision they declare to you.The person who acts arrogantly, refusing to listen either to the priest who stands there serving the LORD your God or to the judge, must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.Then all the people will hear about it, be afraid, and no longer behave arrogantly.“ When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, take possession of it, live in it, and say,‘ I will set a king over me like all the nations around me,’you are to appoint over you the king the LORD your God chooses. Appoint a king from your brothers. You are not to set a foreigner over you, or one who is not of your people.

“ Appoint judges and officials for your tribes in all your towns the LORD your God is giving you. They are to judge the people with righteous judgment.
