但如果说‘是来自人间’，那么民众都会用石头砸我们，因为他们深信约翰是先知。”

若說『從人間來』，百姓都要用石頭打死我們，因為他們信約翰是先知。」

若說「由於人」呢，眾民就會用石頭打死我們；因為他們都確信約翰是神言人。』

但如果說『是來自人間』，那麼民眾都會用石頭砸我們，因為他們深信約翰是先知。」

若云自人、眾民必以石擊我、蓋民信約翰為先知也、

若云由人、民必石擊我、蓋民信約翰為先知也、

若云自人、民必以石擊我、蓋民皆信約翰為先知也、

若云自人、又恐犯眾怒、而遭石擊、蓋眾皆確信如望之為先知也。』

But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

But if we say,‘ From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet.”

But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.

When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

When they sought to seize him, they feared the multitudes, because they considered him to be a prophet.

Many came to him. They said,“ John indeed did no sign, but everything that John said about this man is true.”

Then the captain went with the officers, and brought them without violence, for they were afraid that the people might stone them.

And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.This is he of whom it is written,‘ Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’“ For I tell you, among those who are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptizer, yet he who is least in God’s Kingdom is greater than he.”When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they declared God to be just, having been baptized with John’s baptism.

But they said,“ Not during the feast, lest a riot occur among the people.”

They tried to seize him, but they feared the multitude; for they perceived that he spoke the parable against them. They left him, and went away.
