但如果说‘是来自人间’，那么民众都会用石头砸我们，因为他们深信约翰是先知。”

若說『從人間來』，百姓都要用石頭打死我們，因為他們信約翰是先知。」

但如果說『是來自人間』，那麼民眾都會用石頭砸我們，因為他們深信約翰是先知。」

若云自人、眾民必以石擊我、蓋民信約翰為先知也、

若云由人、民必石擊我、蓋民信約翰為先知也、

若云自人、又恐犯眾怒、而遭石擊、蓋眾皆確信如望之為先知也。』

But if we say,‘ From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”

But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

若云自人、我又懼眾、蓋眾皆以約翰為先知、

然則爾出、欲何觀耶、觀先知乎、我誠告爾、彼大於先知、

希律欲殺之、惟懼眾、蓋眾尊約翰為先知也、

欲執之、惟懼眾、蓋眾以耶穌為先知也、

人多就之、曰、約翰未行異跡、而所言指斯人者皆真、

司聖殿者與吏役、遂往、攜使徒來、惟不敢強、懼民以石擊之也、

惟汝嬰兒、必稱為至上者之先知、因爾將為主前驅、以備其路、

然則爾出欲何觀耶、觀先知乎、我誠告爾、彼大於先知、經載云、我遣我使、在爾前修爾道、此言即指斯人也、我告爾、凡婦之所生、未有大於施洗約翰者、然在天主之國、至小者猶大於斯人也、庶民及稅吏、聽而受洗於約翰、且稱頌天主之義、

惟曰、當節期不可、恐民生亂、○

其人知耶穌設此諭、乃指己而言、欲執之而畏民、乃離之而去、○
