若云自人、又恐犯眾怒、而遭石擊、蓋眾皆確信如望之為先知也。』

若云自人、則我畏眾、蓋皆以約翰為先知也、

然則爾出何為也、觀先知乎、是也、我語汝、且卓越於先知也、

希律欲殺之、而懼眾、因眾以之為先知也、

謀所以執之、而懼眾、蓋皆以之為先知也、

人多就之、曰、約翰未行異蹟、而所指斯人言者、皆真也、

殿司及諸隸往引之來、而不用強、蓋懼民以石擊之也、

惟汝小子、將稱為至上者之先知、因爾行於主前、以備其路、

然則爾出何觀耶、先知乎、是也、我語汝、且卓越於先知也、此即經所謂、我遣我使先爾、以備爾路者也、我語汝、婦之所生、未有大於約翰者、然在上帝國之微者、猶大於彼也、庶民與稅吏、既受約翰之洗、聞之遂義上帝、

惟曰、毋於節期、恐民生亂、○

其人知斯喻指己而言、欲執之、而畏眾、遂去之、○
