但如果說『是來自人間』——我們又怕民眾，因為大家都認為約翰是先知。」

你們出去，究竟是要看什麼呢？一位先知嗎？是的，我告訴你們：他比先知還大。

希律想要殺約翰，可是怕民眾，因為他們認為約翰是先知。

就想拘捕他，可是怕民眾，因為他們都認為耶穌是先知。

有許多人來到他那裡，說：「雖然約翰沒有行過神蹟，但約翰所說的有關這個人的事，都是真的。」

於是守衛長與差役們一起去把使徒們帶來，並沒有用暴力，因為怕民眾用石頭砸他們。

而你——孩子啊！你將被稱為至高者的先知，因為你將走在主的前面，預備他的路，

你們出去，究竟是要看什麼呢？一位先知嗎？是的，我告訴你們：他比先知還大。他就是經上記載的那個人：『看哪，我要差派我的使者在你前頭，他要在你之前預備你的道。』「我告訴你們：在女人所生的人中，沒有一個比約翰更大的；然而在神的國裡，再小的也比約翰更大。」所有已經受過約翰洗禮的民眾和稅吏，聽了這話，都承認神是義的；

不過他們說：「不可在節日期間，免得民中發生騷亂。」

祭司長們、律法師們和長老們知道這比喻是針對他們而說的，就想拘捕耶穌。可是他們怕民眾，於是離開耶穌走了。
