They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

They talked to one another about it. They said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why did you not believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. (niv)

They came to John and said to him,“ Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan— the one you testified about— look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.” (niv)

“ You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. (niv)

As John was completing his work, he said:‘ Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’ (niv)

This is the one I meant when I said,‘ A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ (niv)
