They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

信子的人有永生；不信子的人得不着永生，神的震怒常在他身上。”

就来见约翰，说：“拉比，从前同你在约旦河外、你所见证的那位，现在施洗，众人都往他那里去了。”

约翰为他作见证，喊着说：“这就是我曾说：‘那在我以后来的，反成了在我以前的，因他本来在我以前。’”从他丰满的恩典里，我们都领受了，而且恩上加恩。律法本是藉着摩西传的；恩典和真理都是由耶稣基督来的。从来没有人看见神，只有在父怀里的独生子将他表明出来。

你们曾差人到约翰那里，他为真理作过见证。其实，我所受的见证不是从人来的；然而，我说这些话，为要叫你们得救。约翰是点着的明灯，你们情愿暂时喜欢他的光。

约翰将行尽他的程途说：‘你们以为我是谁？我不是基督；只是有一位在我以后来的，我解他脚上的鞋带也是不配的。’

这就是我曾说：‘有一位在我以后来、反成了在我以前的，因他本来在我以前。’
