They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why did you not believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.

I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

So they came to John and told him,“ Rabbi, the one you testified about, and who was with you across the Jordan, is baptizing— and everyone is going to him.”

( John testified concerning him and exclaimed,“ This was the one of whom I said,‘ The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”)Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness,for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side— he has revealed him.

You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.I don’t receive human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.John was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

Now as John was completing his mission, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.’

This is the one I told you about:‘ After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’
