They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

信子的，有永生；不信從子的，必不得見永生，神的震怒卻常在他身上。”

我看見了，就作見證說：‘這就是神的兒子。’”

他們來到約翰那裡，對他說：“拉比，你看，從前和你在約旦河東，你為他作見證的那一位，他也在施洗，眾人都到他那裡去了。”

約翰為他作見證，大聲說：“這一位就是我所說的：‘那在我以後來的，位分比我高，因為他本來是在我以前的。’”從他的豐盛裡我們都領受了，而且恩上加恩。律法是藉著摩西頒布的，恩典和真理卻是藉著耶穌基督而來的。從來沒有人見過神，只有在父懷裡的獨生子把他彰顯出來。

你們曾經派人到約翰那裡，他為真理作過見證。我不接受從人而來的見證，但我說這些事，是要你們得救。約翰是一盞點亮的燈，你們情願暫時在他的光中歡樂。

約翰快要跑完他的路程的時候，說：‘你們以為我是誰？我不是基督。他是在我以後來的，我就是給他解腳上的鞋帶也不配。’

這一位就是我所說的：‘有一個人，是在我以後來的，位分比我高，因為他本來是在我以前的。’
