“你们要提防经文士。他们喜欢穿着长袍走来走去，喜爱街市上的致敬问候，又喜爱会堂里的首位、宴席中的上座。

“ Beware of the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes, and they love elaborate greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.

“ Beware of those scribes who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts;

“ How terrible for you Pharisees! You love the most important seats in the synagogues. You love having people greet you with respect in the market.

As he taught, he said,“ Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in long robes. They like to be greeted with respect in the market.They love to have the most important seats in the synagogues. They also love to have the places of honor at dinners.

Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table. So he told them a story.

Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves.None of you should look out just for your own good. Each of you should also look out for the good of others.As you deal with one another, you should think and act as Jesus did.

During that time a crowd of many thousands had gathered. There were so many people that they were stepping on one another. Jesus spoke first to his disciples.“ Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees,” he said.“ They just pretend to be godly.

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. (niv)

You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message. (niv)

Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor. (niv)
