「你們法利賽人有禍了！因為你們喜愛會堂裡的首位，喜愛街市上的致敬問候。

耶穌在他的教導中說：「你們要當心經文士們。他們喜歡穿著長袍走來走去，喜歡街市上的致敬問候，又喜歡會堂裡的首位、宴席中的上座。

耶穌留意到被邀請的人怎樣在那裡挑選上座，就對他們講了一個比喻說：

做任何事都不要出於爭競，也不可出於虛榮，而要以謙卑的心，各人看別人比自己強；每個人不要只注重自己的事，也要注重別人的事。你們應當有這樣的意念，這也是基督耶穌的意念。

那時有上萬的人群聚集，甚至彼此踐踏。耶穌一開始先對他的門徒們說：「你們要提防法利賽人的酵母，就是偽善。
