耶稣在他的教导中说：“你们要当心经文士们。他们喜欢穿着长袍走来走去，喜欢街市上的致敬问候，又喜欢会堂里的首位、宴席中的上座。

耶稣留意到被邀请的人怎样在那里挑选上座，就对他们讲了一个比喻说：

做任何事都不要出于争竞，也不可出于虚荣，而要以谦卑的心，各人看别人比自己强；每个人不要只注重自己的事，也要注重别人的事。你们应当有这样的意念，这也是基督耶稣的意念。

那时有上万的人群聚集，甚至彼此践踏。耶稣一开始先对他的门徒们说：“你们要提防法利赛人的酵母，就是伪善。
