While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked,“ Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:“‘ The Lord said to my Lord:“ Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’David himself calls him‘ Lord.’ How then can he be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with delight. This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: (niv)

regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David,and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. (niv)

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord— (niv)

Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” (niv)

He called out,“ Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more,“ Son of David, have mercy on me!” (niv)

“‘ In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land.In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.’ (niv)

But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. (niv)

“ The days are coming,” declares the Lord,“ when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior. (niv)

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,“ What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”“ The son of David,” they replied.He said to them,“ How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him‘ Lord’? For he says,“‘ The Lord said to my Lord:“ Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’If then David calls him‘ Lord,’ how can he be his son?” (niv)

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. then my covenant with David my servant— and my covenant with the Levites who are priests ministering before me— can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. (niv)
