And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people— for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

The governor answered and said to them,“ Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said,“ Barabbas!”Pilate said to them,“ What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him,“ Let Him be crucified!”Then the governor said,“ Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying,“ Let Him be crucified!”When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying,“ I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.”And all the people answered and said,“ His blood be on us and on our children.”

And they reasoned among themselves, saying,“ It is because we have taken no bread.”

And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying,“ Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt,and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,“ Out of Egypt I called My Son.”Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.

And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.

And they reasoned among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’

Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,“ Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.”He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:“ Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”
