耶穌天天在聖殿裡教導人。祭司長們、經文士們和民間的首領們想要殺害他，可是他們不知道怎樣下手，因為民眾都傾心聽他。

不久以後，耶穌走遍各個城鎮鄉村，講道、傳神國的福音。與他在一起的有十二使徒。

耶穌回答他：「我一向公開地對世人講話。我總是在會堂和聖殿，就是所有猶太人聚集的地方教導人。我沒有在隱祕中講過什麼。

耶穌進了聖殿，正教導人的時候，祭司長們和民間的長老們前來問他：「你憑什麼權柄做這些事？是誰給你這權柄的？」耶穌回答他們，說：「我也要問你們一個問題，如果你們回答我，我就告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。約翰的洗禮是從哪裡來的？是來自天上，還是來自人間呢？」他們就彼此討論，說：「如果我們說『是來自天上』，他就會問我們『那麼你們為什麼不相信他呢？』但如果說『是來自人間』——我們又怕民眾，因為大家都認為約翰是先知。」於是他們回答耶穌，說：「我們不知道。」耶穌就對他們說：「我也不告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。」

他們又煽動民眾、長老和經文士們就忽然來抓住司提反，把他帶到議會，

彼得和約翰正向民眾講話的時候，祭司們、聖殿守衛長和撒都該人忽然來了。

這時候，耶穌對那群人說：「你們帶著刀劍和棍棒出來抓我，就像對付強盜那樣嗎？我天天坐在聖殿裡教導人，你們並沒有抓我。

他們又來到耶路撒冷。當耶穌在聖殿裡行走的時候，祭司長們、經文士們和長老們來到他那裡。他們問：「你憑什麼權柄做這些事？誰給你這權柄，讓你做這些事？」耶穌對他們說：「我要問你們一個問題，你們回答我，我就告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。約翰的洗禮是來自天上，還是來自人間呢？你們回答我！」他們就彼此討論，說：「如果我們說『是來自天上』，他就會問『那麼你們為什麼不相信他呢？』可是我們能說『是來自人間』嗎？」原來他們怕民眾，因為大家都認為約翰的確是先知。於是他們回答耶穌，說：「我們不知道。」耶穌就對他們說：「我也不告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。」
