耶稣天天在圣殿里教导人。祭司长们、经文士们和民间的首领们想要杀害他，可是他们不知道怎样下手，因为民众都倾心听他。

不久以后，耶稣走遍各个城镇乡村，讲道、传神国的福音。与他在一起的有十二使徒。

耶稣回答他：“我一向公开地对世人讲话。我总是在会堂和圣殿，就是所有犹太人聚集的地方教导人。我没有在隐秘中讲过什么。

耶稣进了圣殿，正教导人的时候，祭司长们和民间的长老们前来问他：“你凭什么权柄做这些事？是谁给你这权柄的？”耶稣回答他们，说：“我也要问你们一个问题，如果你们回答我，我就告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。约翰的洗礼是从哪里来的？是来自天上，还是来自人间呢？”他们就彼此讨论，说：“如果我们说‘是来自天上’，他就会问我们‘那么你们为什么不相信他呢？’但如果说‘是来自人间’——我们又怕民众，因为大家都认为约翰是先知。”于是他们回答耶稣，说：“我们不知道。”耶稣就对他们说：“我也不告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。”

他们又煽动民众、长老和经文士们就忽然来抓住司提反，把他带到议会，

彼得和约翰正向民众讲话的时候，祭司们、圣殿守卫长和撒都该人忽然来了。

这时候，耶稣对那群人说：“你们带着刀剑和棍棒出来抓我，就像对付强盗那样吗？我天天坐在圣殿里教导人，你们并没有抓我。

他们又来到耶路撒冷。当耶稣在圣殿里行走的时候，祭司长们、经文士们和长老们来到他那里。他们问：“你凭什么权柄做这些事？谁给你这权柄，让你做这些事？”耶稣对他们说：“我要问你们一个问题，你们回答我，我就告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。约翰的洗礼是来自天上，还是来自人间呢？你们回答我！”他们就彼此讨论，说：“如果我们说‘是来自天上’，他就会问‘那么你们为什么不相信他呢？’可是我们能说‘是来自人间’吗？”原来他们怕民众，因为大家都认为约翰的确是先知。于是他们回答耶稣，说：“我们不知道。”耶稣就对他们说：“我也不告诉你们我凭什么权柄做这些事。”
