So Joseph went also. He went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea. That is where Bethlehem, the town of David, was. Joseph went there because he belonged to the family line of David.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.

The Lord says,“ Bethlehem Ephrathah, you might not be an important town in the nation of Judah. But out of you will come for me a ruler over Israel. His family line goes back to the early years of your nation. It goes all the way back to days of long ago.”

Doesn’t Scripture say that the Messiah will come from the family line of David? Doesn’t it say that he will come from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”

The Lord said to Samuel,“ How long will you be filled with sorrow because of Saul? I have refused to have him as king over Israel. Fill your animal horn with olive oil and go on your way. I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

In the sixth month after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee.He was sent to a virgin. The girl was engaged to a man named Joseph. He came from the family line of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

There he lived in a town called Nazareth. So what the prophets had said about Jesus came true. They had said that he would be called a Nazarene.

Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his special work for God and others. It was thought that he was the son of Joseph. Joseph was the son of Heli.Heli was the son of Matthat. Matthat was the son of Levi. Levi was the son of Melki. Melki was the son of Jannai. Jannai was the son of Joseph.Joseph was the son of Mattathias. Mattathias was the son of Amos. Joseph was the husband of Mary. And Mary was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Messiah.So there were 14 generations from Abraham to David. There were 14 from David until the Jewish people were forced to go away to Babylon. And there were 14 from that time to the Messiah.

Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. On the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue as he usually did. He stood up to read.

Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem. He greeted those cutting and gathering the grain. He said,“ May the Lord be with you!”“ And may the Lord bless you!” they replied.

“ Young man, whose son are you?” Saul asked him. David said,“ I’m the son of Jesse from Bethlehem.”

The two women continued on their way. At last they arrived in Bethlehem. The whole town was stirred up because of them. The women in the town asked,“ Can this possibly be Naomi?”

So Rachel died. She was buried beside the road to Ephrath. Ephrath was also called Bethlehem.

The women living there said,“ Naomi has a son!” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse. Jesse was the father of David.

As I was returning from Paddan, Rachel died. It made me very sad. She died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way. We weren’t very far away from Ephrath. So I buried her body there beside the road to Ephrath.” Ephrath was also called Bethlehem.

Your father might miss me. If he does, then tell him,‘ David begged me to let him hurry home to Bethlehem. A yearly sacrifice is being offered there for his whole family group.’

Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea. This happened while Herod was king of Judea. After Jesus’ birth, Wise Men from the east came to Jerusalem.They asked,“ Where is the child who has been born to be king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose. Now we have come to worship him.”When King Herod heard about it, he was very upset. Everyone in Jerusalem was troubled too.So Herod called together all the chief priests of the people. He also called the teachers of the law. He asked them where the Messiah was going to be born.“ In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied.“ This is what the prophet has written. He said,“‘ But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are certainly not the least important among the towns of Judah. A ruler will come out of you. He will rule my people Israel like a shepherd.’ ”( Micah 5:2)

Samuel did what the Lord said. He arrived at Bethlehem. The elders of the town met him. They were trembling with fear. They asked,“ Have you come in peace?”

“ Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.“ Come and see,” said Philip.

Then the elders and all the people at the gate said,“ We are witnesses. The woman is coming into your home. May the Lord make her like Rachel and Leah. Together they built up the family of Israel. May you be an important person in Ephrathah. May you be famous in Bethlehem.

David was the son of an Ephrathite whose name was Jesse. Jesse was from Bethlehem in Judah and had eight sons. When Saul was king, Jesse was already very old.

Salmon was the father of Boaz. Boaz was the father of Obed.Obed was the father of Jesse. And Jesse was the father of David.
