Answer me.”They reasoned with themselves, saying,“ If we should say,‘ From heaven;’ he will say,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’If we should say,‘ From men’”— they feared the people, for all held John to really be a prophet.They answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” Jesus said to them,“ Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Every day Jesus was teaching in the temple, and every night he would go out and spend the night on the mountain that is called Olivet.All the people came early in the morning to him in the temple to hear him.

It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and the unleavened bread, and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might seize him by deception, and kill him.

Jesus answered him,“ I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.

Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.They took counsel together that they might take Jesus by deceit, and kill him.

Didn’t Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill me?”

So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple,“ What do you think— that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

I know that you are Abraham’s offspring, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father.”They answered him,“ Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them,“ If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do this.

When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said,“ By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?”
