Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.

耶穌日訓殿中、而司祭長經生及諸紳正謀所以置諸死地、苦無良策；蓋民皆樂聆其訓、為之神往。

Every day Jesus was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests and the teachers of the law were trying to kill him. So were the leaders among the people.

And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him,

In that hour Jesus said to the crowd,“ Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me.

The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him.“ By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked.“ And who gave you authority to do this?”Jesus replied,“ I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.John’s baptism— was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ Of human origin’…”( They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” Jesus said,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.

Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.

“ I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied.“ I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.

Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”

Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.

Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.

Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

So from that day on they plotted to take his life.Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover.They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another,“ What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?”But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”“ Abraham is our father,” they answered.“ If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus,“ then you would do what Abraham did.As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.

Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him.“ By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked.“ And who gave you this authority?”
