And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him,and they said to him,“ By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?”Jesus said to them,“ I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.”And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’But shall we say,‘ From man’?”— they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet.So they answered Jesus,“ We do not know.” And Jesus said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet.And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.

It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,

Jesus answered him,“ I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”

And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.

Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple,“ What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?”Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”They answered him,“ Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them,“ If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did,but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.

And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said,“ By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”
