耶穌對他們說：「你們是在人面前自稱為義的，你們的心，神卻知道；因為人以為尊貴的，是神看為可憎惡的。

有一類人，自以為純潔，卻沒有洗淨自己的污穢。

且對人說：『你站開吧！不要挨近我，因為我對你來說太神聖了。』這些人惹我鼻中冒煙，如終日燃燒的火。

可是你，你為甚麼評斷弟兄呢？你又為甚麼輕看弟兄呢？因我們都要站在神的審判臺前。

但以色列人追求律法的義，反而達不到律法的義。這是甚麼緣故呢？是因為他們不憑着信心，而是憑着行為，他們正跌在那絆腳石上。

因為不明白神的義，想要立自己的義，他們就不服神的義了。

於是法利賽人說：「你們也受了迷惑嗎？難道官長或法利賽人中有信他的嗎？但這些不明白律法的眾人是被詛咒的！」

法利賽人獨自站着，自言自語地禱告說：『神啊，我感謝你，我不像別人勒索、不義、姦淫，也不像這個稅吏。

其實，我也可以靠肉體；若是別人以為他可以依靠肉體，我更可以。我出生後第八天受割禮；我是以色列族、便雅憫支派的人，是希伯來人所生的希伯來人。就律法說，我是法利賽人；就熱心說，我是迫害教會的；就律法上的義說，我是無可指責的。

請耶穌的法利賽人看見這事，心裏說：「這人若是先知，一定知道摸他的是誰，是個怎樣的女人；她是個罪人哪！」

以前沒有律法的時候，我是活的；但是誡命來到，罪活起來，

他們就罵他：「你是他的門徒，而我們是摩西的門徒。

那人要證明自己有理，就對耶穌說：「誰是我的鄰舍呢？」

你們因耶和華言語而戰兢的人哪，當聽他的話：「你們的弟兄，就是恨惡你們，因我名趕出你們的，曾說：『願耶和華彰顯榮耀，好讓我們看見你們的喜樂。』但蒙羞的終究是他們！

主對我說：『你去吧！我要差你到遠方外邦人那裏去。』」

猶太人回答他：「我們說你是撒瑪利亞人，並且是被鬼附的，這話不是很對嗎？」

眾人看見，都私下議論說：「他竟然到罪人家裏去住宿。」

法利賽人和文士私下議論說：「這個人接納罪人，又同他們吃飯。」

他對父親說：『你看，我服侍你這麼多年，從來沒有違背過你的命令，而你從來沒有給我一隻小山羊，叫我和朋友們一同快樂。但你這個兒子和娼妓吃光了你的財產，他一回來，你倒為他宰了肥牛犢。』

他們回答他說：「你完全是生在罪中的，還要來教訓我們嗎？」於是他們把他趕出去了。
