To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:

Jesus told a story to some people who were sure they were right with God. They looked down on everyone else.

He said to them,“ You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

those who are pure in their own eyes and yet are not cleansed of their filth;

who say,‘ Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!’ Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day.

You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal.Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

“ You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted.“ Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law— there is a curse on them.”

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other people— robbers, evildoers, adulterers— or even like this tax collector.

though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,“ If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is— that she is a sinner.”

Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

Then they hurled insults at him and said,“ You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”

Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word:“ Your own people who hate you, and exclude you because of my name, have said,‘ Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your joy!’ Yet they will be put to shame.

“ Then the Lord said to me,‘ Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”

The Jews answered him,“ Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”

All the people saw this and began to mutter,“ He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered,“ This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

But he answered his father,‘ Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

To this they replied,“ You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.
