Herod and his soldiers laughed at him and made fun of him. They dressed him in a beautiful robe. Then they sent him back to Pilate.

People looked down on him. They didn’t accept him. He knew all about pain and suffering. He was like someone people turn their faces away from. We looked down on him. We didn’t have any respect for him.

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples what would happen to him. He told them he must go to Jerusalem. There he must suffer many things from the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law. He must be killed and on the third day rise to life again.

They took off his clothes and put a purple robe on him.Then they twisted thorns together to make a crown. They placed it on his head. They put a stick in his right hand. Then they fell on their knees in front of him and made fun of him.“ We honor you, king of the Jews!” they said.They spit on him. They hit him on the head with the stick again and again.

Then some began to spit at him. They blindfolded him. They hit him with their fists. They said,“ Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.

Then they spit in his face. They hit him with their fists. Others slapped him.

Jerusalem, you are being attacked. So bring your troops together. Our enemies have surrounded us. They want to slap the face of Israel’s ruler.

Many people were shocked when they saw him. He was so scarred that he no longer looked like a person. His body was so twisted that he did not look like a human being anymore.

Long ago God planned that Jesus would be handed over to you. With the help of evil people, you put Jesus to death. You nailed him to the cross.

The people stood there watching. The rulers even made fun of Jesus. They said,“ He saved others. Let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”

There were men guarding Jesus. They began laughing at him and beating him.They blindfolded him. They said,“ Prophesy! Who hit you?”They also said many other things to make fun of him.

So they tied him up and led him away. Then they handed him over to Pilate, who was the governor.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped.The soldiers twisted thorns together to make a crown. They put it on Jesus’ head. Then they put a purple robe on him.They went up to him again and again. They kept saying,“ We honor you, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.Once more Pilate came out. He said to the Jews gathered there,“ Look, I am bringing Jesus out to you. I want to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Then Pilate said to them,“ Here is the man!”

The soldiers put a purple robe on Jesus. Then they twisted thorns together to make a crown. They placed it on his head.They began to call out to him,“ We honor you, king of the Jews!”Again and again they hit him on the head with a stick. They spit on him. They fell on their knees and pretended to honor him.After they had made fun of him, they took off the purple robe. They put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him out to nail him to a cross.

“ He has committed crimes,” they replied.“ If he hadn’t, we would not have handed him over to you.”

Then the whole group got up and led Jesus off to Pilate.

When Jesus said that, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face.“ Is this any way to answer the high priest?” he asked.

It was very early in the morning. The chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law, and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they tied Jesus up and led him away. Then they handed him over to Pilate.

Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning. The Jewish leaders did not want to be made“ unclean.” They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal. So they did not enter the palace.

“ Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied.“ Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”
