He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him;

Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, dressing him in elegant clothes, Herod sent him back to Pilate.

He was despised and rejected by people, one who experienced pain and was acquainted with illness; people hid their faces from him; he was despised, and we considered him insignificant.

From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

( just as many were horrified by the sight of you) he was so disfigured he no longer looked like a man;

this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.

The people also stood there watching, but the rulers ridiculed him, saying,“ He saved others. Let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, his chosen one!”

Now the men who were holding Jesus under guard began to mock him and beat him.They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly,“ Prophesy! Who hit you?”They also said many other things against him, reviling him.

They tied him up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged severely.The soldiers braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe.They came up to him again and again and said,“ Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly in the face.Again Pilate went out and said to the Jewish leaders,“ Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no reason for an accusation against him.”So Jesus came outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them,“ Look, here is the man!”

They put a purple cloak on him and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him.They began to salute him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him.When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

They replied,“ If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”

Then the whole group of them rose up and brought Jesus before Pilate.

When Jesus had said this, one of the high priest’s officers who stood nearby struck him on the face and said,“ Is that the way you answer the high priest?”

Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor’s residence.( Now it was very early morning.) They did not go into the governor’s residence so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal.

Pilate answered,“ I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and your chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”
