saying, There was in a city a judge, who feared not God, and regarded not man:

He said:“ In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought.

He said,“ In a certain town there was a judge. He didn’t have any respect for God or care about what people thought.

He said,“ In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man.

“ There was a judge in a certain city,” he said,“ who neither feared God nor cared about people.

“ There was a judge in a certain town who didn’t fear God or respect people.

saying,“ In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect any person.

saying:“ There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man.

“ There was a judge in a certain town who didn’t fear God or respect man.

Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:

The righteous taketh knowledge of the cause of the poor; The wicked hath not understanding to know it.

And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;

Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:Their feet are swift to shed blood;Destruction and misery are in their ways;And the way of peace have they not known:There is no fear of God before their eyes.

And I said, Hear, I pray you, ye heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: is it not for you to know justice?ye who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones;who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

Behold, the princes of Israel, every one according to his power, have been in thee to shed blood.In thee have they set light by father and mother; in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the sojourner; in thee have they wronged the fatherless and the widow.Thou hast despised my holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths.

When I went forth to the gate unto the city, When I prepared my seat in the street,The young men saw me and hid themselves, And the aged rose up and stood;The princes refrained from talking, And laid their hand on their mouth;The voice of the nobles was hushed, And their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me; And when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me:Because I delivered the poor that cried, The fatherless also, that had none to help him.The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; And I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: My justice was as a robe and a diadem.I was eyes to the blind, And feet was I to the lame.I was a father to the needy: And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous, And plucked the prey out of his teeth.

O Jehovah, our Lord, How excellent is thy name in all the earth, Who hast set thy glory upon the heavens!Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou established strength, Because of thine adversaries, That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, The moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:and let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge themselves: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast put away the Asheroth out of the land, and hast set thy heart to seek God.And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again among the people from Beer- sheba to the hill- country of Ephraim, and brought them back unto Jehovah, the God of their fathers.And he set judges in the land throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city,and said to the judges, Consider what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for Jehovah; and he is with you in the judgment.Now therefore let the fear of Jehovah be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with Jehovah our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites and the priests, and of the heads of the fathers’ houses of Israel, for the judgment of Jehovah, and for controversies. And they returned to Jerusalem.And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of Jehovah, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Was not this to know me? saith Jehovah.But thine eyes and thy heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for shedding innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: the enemy hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth not man.
