Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question:“ Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

A certain ruler asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

A certain ruler asked Jesus a question.“ Good teacher,” he said,“ what must I do to receive eternal life?”

And a ruler asked him,“ Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

A ruler asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

A ruler questioned Him, saying,“ Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying,“ Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

A ruler asked Him,“ Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Now a certain ruler asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

A certain ruler asked him, saying,“ Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked,“ Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”“ Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked.“ Only God is truly good.But to answer your question, you know the commandments:‘ You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’”“ Teacher,” the man replied,“ I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him.“ There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him.“ Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,“ How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!”This amazed them. But Jesus said again,“ Dear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God.In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”The disciples were astounded.“ Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.Jesus looked at them intently and said,“ Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”Then Peter began to speak up.“ We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said.“ Yes,” Jesus replied,“ and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property— along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.”

Someone came to Jesus with this question:“ Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”“ Why ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied.“ There is only One who is good. But to answer your question— if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.”“ Which ones?” the man asked. And Jesus replied:“‘ You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely.Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.’”“ I’ve obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied.“ What else must I do?”Jesus told him,“ If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.I’ll say it again— it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”The disciples were astounded.“ Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.Jesus looked at them intently and said,“ Humanly speaking, it is impossible. Then he brought them out and asked,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

“ So why do you keep calling me‘ Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question:“ Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”Jesus replied,“ What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”The man answered,“‘ You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And,‘ Love your neighbor as yourself.’”“ Right!” Jesus told him.“ Do this and you will live!”

The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says to the priests:“ A son honors his father, and a servant respects his master. If I am your father and master, where are the honor and respect I deserve? You have shown contempt for my name!“ But you ask,‘ How have we ever shown contempt for your name?’

You call me‘ Teacher’ and‘ Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am.And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money.

Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles,“ Brothers, what should we do?”
